What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers. Definition, how it differs from SEO, and where to start.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping your content, entity data and citations so that AI answer engines name and recommend your brand inside the answers they generate. Where a traditional search returned a page of links to choose from, an answer engine returns a single synthesized response, and AEO is the work of making sure that response cites you. The engines that matter today are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews.

Key takeaways
  • AEO is optimizing to be cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers, not to rank in a list of links.
  • It depends on two things at once: being named by the sources engines trust, and publishing clear, structured content a model can quote.
  • AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are interchangeable terms for the same practice.
  • Start by measuring which engines already mention you, then fix the sources and pages behind those answers.

How answer engines decide what to cite

An answer engine does not show a ranked list of ten blue links. It reads across many sources, decides which are trustworthy and relevant, and writes a single answer that blends them, usually naming a few brands and citing a handful of pages. AEO works backward from that behavior. To be recommended, you need the engine to both trust the sources that mention you and find your own pages clear enough to quote.

That splits the work into two halves. The first is citation: getting named on the third-party pages, reviews, comparisons and directories that engines pull from, because a recommendation is usually assembled from what other credible sources say about you. The second is structure: writing your own content so a model can lift a clean, self-contained answer from it, with plain definitions, direct claims and consistent facts about your brand. Do both and you become the easy, safe answer for the engine to give.

AEO vs SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for a results page. The goal is to rank a URL high enough that a human clicks it, so the unit of success is a position and the reward is a visit. AEO optimizes for the answer itself. There is no page of options to compare, only one synthesized response, so the unit of success is whether your brand is named and cited inside it.

The two disciplines overlap but do not substitute for each other. Strong SEO still helps, because engines lean on pages that already rank and on domains they already trust, so classic signals like authoritative content and earned links feed AEO. What AEO adds is a focus on being quotable and on the off-site citations that shape a recommendation, plus a different scoreboard: share of the answer rather than share of the clicks. A page can rank first in Google and still go unmentioned by ChatGPT, which is exactly the gap AEO exists to close.

AEO vs GEO

You will also see this work called generative engine optimization, or GEO. In practice the two terms are interchangeable: both describe optimizing to be cited and recommended by AI systems that generate answers rather than rank links. AEO tends to emphasize the answer the user receives and GEO the generative engine producing it, but they point at the same job and the same tactics, so use whichever your team prefers. Our fuller writeup lives in the generative engine optimization (GEO) entry.

Where to start with AEO

AEO is measurable, so start by finding out where you actually stand rather than guessing.

  1. Measure your baseline.Run your buyers' real questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews and record whether, and where, your brand is named. A free AI visibility checker gives you a first read in minutes.
  2. Read the citations. For each answer, note which domains the engine cites instead of, or alongside, you. Those LLM citations are the map of what the model currently trusts in your category, and the shortlist of sources you need to earn a place on.
  3. Fix the content behind the answers. Get named on the third-party sources that already get cited, and rewrite your own key pages to be clear, structured and directly quotable, with a plain definition near the top of each one.
  4. Track the trend. AEO is continuous, not a one-time edit, because answers shift as models and sources change. Watch your share of the answer over time and, ideally, tie it back to the traffic and revenue it produces.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers, the way SEO targets Google's ten blue links. It means being well represented in the sources answer engines trust and describing yourself in clear, extractable language.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes to rank a page in a list of links a user then chooses from. AEO optimizes to be named inside a single synthesized answer, where there is no list to browse. AEO depends more on third-party citations, clear structured content, and being the consensus source across the web.
