What Is AI Share of Voice?
AI share of voice is the percentage of AI answers about your category that mention your brand versus competitors. Definition, how it is calculated, and why it is the key AEO metric.
AI share of voice is the percentage of AI-generated answers about your category that mention your brand, measured against the total brand mentions your competitors receive across the same set of answers. It reframes the classic share-of-voice metric for a world where a language model, not a page of blue links, decides which names a buyer sees. A high score means engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews reach for your brand first when someone asks for a recommendation in your category.
How AI share of voice is calculated
Share of voice is a ratio, so you need a numerator (mentions of your brand) and a denominator (all brand mentions) counted over a fixed set of answers. Hold the question set and the engines constant, sample the answers over a defined window, then count who gets named.
Here is a worked example. You track one buyer question, "what is the best project management software," across the engines you care about and collect 10 answers over a week. Reading those 10 answers, you count 30 total brand mentions: every time any tool is named. Your brand is named 6 times. Your AI share of voice is 6 divided by 30, which is 20 percent. The remaining 80 percent is split among the competitors the engines named instead of you.
There are two common denominators, and it pays to be clear which you are using. Mention-based share of voice divides your mentions by all brand mentions, as above, and rewards being named prominently and repeatedly. Answer-based share of voice instead measures the fraction of answers you appear in at all, which is a simpler presence rate. Both are valid; just report the same one over time so the trend is comparable.
One phrasing under-samples, because AI answers vary between runs. Run several phrasings of each question and aggregate the mentions, so a move in your share of voice reflects a real shift rather than the natural variance of a single answer.
Why AI share of voice matters
On a page of Google results a buyer can scroll past ten links and still find you at position eight. An AI answer does not work that way. It names a short list, often three to five brands, and stops. That makes attention finite and share of voice close to zero-sum: every point you gain is a point a competitor loses, and being absent from the list means being invisible at the exact moment the buyer forms a shortlist.
A simple yes-or-no "are we mentioned" check misses this competitive dimension. Share of voice captures the whole picture: not just whether you appear, but how much of the category's answer space you own versus everyone else. Tracked over time, it tells you whether your position is compounding or eroding, and which rivals are gaining the ground you are losing. That is why it is one of the core numbers behind AI search visibility as a whole.
- It is comparative. A rising mention count can still mean a falling share if the whole category is being named more often.
- It maps to real demand. Weight questions by how often buyers actually ask them so your score reflects the answers that carry commercial intent.
- It points to the work. When a competitor holds share you want, the sources engines cite in those answers show you which pages and mentions to earn.
How to track AI share of voice
Tracking it by hand does not scale past a handful of questions, because you have to re-run every prompt on every engine on a schedule and tally the mentions. A dedicated tool automates the sampling and the counting. Measureruns your buyers' real questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews, scores your share of voice against the competitors each answer names, and shows the sources winning the citations you are missing. Because it also folds in native Google Analytics 4, Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, you can put share of voice next to the traffic and revenue it drives rather than treating it as a standalone vanity number. You can also start for free with the AI visibility checker.
Once you are tracking it, the next question is whether the metric is paying off. For turning a share-of-voice trend into a business case, see how to measure AI search ROI.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI share of voice?
AI share of voice is the percentage of AI answers about your category that name your brand, relative to the total brand mentions across those answers. If ten answers to your buyers' questions produce thirty brand mentions and six of them are you, your AI share of voice is 20 percent.
Why does AI share of voice matter?
Because AI answers name a short list of brands, not a long results page. Share of voice tells you how much of that finite attention you own versus competitors, which is a truer competitive signal than a raw visibility percentage measured in isolation.
We build Measure, a self-serve platform that tracks how AI engines describe and recommend brands, and connects that visibility to real traffic and revenue. Everything here is written from what we see in the data every day.
